Chapter Nine

“I don’t suppose either of you would care to tell the master of the house what all of this has to do with last night's events, would you?”

Salavar’s sarcastic comment reminded me that, while he seemed to know a bit about the Crooked Family, our host didn’t know everything and the two of us standing there just staring at each other didn’t tell him anything. Since we were using his private study and his house, for that matter, it might be nice of us to include him. We apologized to him and Edawan told him what he’d learned about Untok and Father Sellik.

“Sellik has led his Clan for many years, he is a competent leader, produces a healthy profit for the Crooked Family,” Edawan explained. “He also very much loved his oldest son, to such a degree as to suggest a . . . blindspot to the boy’s weaknesses. According to my sources, Sellik refused to believe the accepted version of events regarding the night of Untok’s death.”

The long and short of it, according to Master Edawan, is that, after brooding about the Run over the last few months, Daddy decided that there was no way his darling little, okay, not so little, boy could ever be at fault. Someone else had to be responsible for Untok’s death and I’d been elected, yay me. I got picked because I’d obviously led us too slowly to and from the site, took too long opening doors, whatever excuse the old bastard could pin on me. If I’d only done my job right, or been capable of doing it right, his dear boy would still be here. No surprise he’d singled me out for this honor, I’d been targeted before; anything that went wrong, blame the girl, the not-from-the-street kid who can’t cut it and so on and so on. I made the perfect person to blame, once again, yay me.

The merchant prince listened carefully to Edawan’s story, then, focused his gaze on me. To my relief I saw compassion and concern in his eyes. “What can I do to help you, Elasia? I don’t know what I can do, but I will do anything I can.” he said, leaning forward in his chair.

“Thank you, sir,” I told him, genuinely touched by his kindness and calling me ‘Elasia’. “I appreciate the offer. I’m sorta numb right now, this is a lot to take in. We got grilled pretty hard after that job; I think I mentioned that. You know, I wondered what that was all about back then. They even had a truth seeker there at the last session.”

That had thrown me off balance, for sure, I told Mr. Salavar. “They’d already questioned us two different times, wouldn’t let us sleep or eat, made us sit, all alone, in cramped little rooms. I’d been in that room for hours when the mage came into the room. He waved his hands and muttered his spell and told me I couldn’t tell a lie.
