Chapter Nine
ââI donât suppose either of you would care to tell the master of the house what all of this has to do with last night's events, would you?â
âSalavarâs sarcastic comment reminded me that, while he seemed to know a bit about the Crooked Family, our host didnât know everything and the two of us standing there just staring at each other didnât tell him anything. Since we were using his private study and his house, for that matter, it might be nice of us to include him. We apologized to him and Edawan told him what heâd learned about Untok and Father Sellik.
ââSellik has led his Clan for many years, he is a competent leader, produces a healthy profit for the Crooked Family,â Edawan explained. âHe also very much loved his oldest son, to such a degree as to suggest a . . . blindspot to the boyâs weaknesses. According to my sources, Sellik refused to believe the accepted version of events regarding the night of Untokâs death.â
âThe long and short of it, according to Master Edawan, is that, after brooding about the Run over the last few months, Daddy decided that there was no way his darling little, okay, not so little, boy could ever be at fault. Someone else had to be responsible for Untokâs death and Iâd been elected, yay me. I got picked because Iâd obviously led us too slowly to and from the site, took too long opening doors, whatever excuse the old bastard could pin on me. If Iâd only done my job right, or been capable of doing it right, his dear boy would still be here. No surprise heâd singled me out for this honor, Iâd been targeted before; anything that went wrong, blame the girl, the not-from-the-street kid who canât cut it and so on and so on. I made the perfect person to blame, once again, yay me.
âThe merchant prince listened carefully to Edawanâs story, then, focused his gaze on me. To my relief I saw compassion and concern in his eyes. âWhat can I do to help you, Elasia? I donât know what I can do, but I will do anything I can.â he said, leaning forward in his chair.
ââThank you, sir,â I told him, genuinely touched by his kindness and calling me âElasiaâ. âI appreciate the offer. Iâm sorta numb right now, this is a lot to take in. We got grilled pretty hard after that job; I think I mentioned that. You know, I wondered what that was all about back then. They even had a truth seeker there at the last session.â
âThat had thrown me off balance, for sure, I told Mr. Salavar. âTheyâd already questioned us two different times, wouldnât let us sleep or eat, made us sit, all alone, in cramped little rooms. Iâd been in that room for hours when the mage came into the room. He waved his hands and muttered his spell and told me I couldnât tell a lie.
